Täby is a municipality of some 60,000 inhabitants located 15 km north of Stockholm. Täby Orienteringsklubb (Täby Orienteering Club) was founded in 1992 through a merger of the two clubs Täby IS and Täby SOK. Täby Orienteering has some 400 members and is one of the largest orienteering clubs in the greater Stockholm area. The center of activities is at Skavlötens friluftsgård at Rönningesjön (Lake Rönninge).
There is a great variety of ages, experience, orienteering skills and ambition levels among the club members. We have both young and old as well as beginners and experienced orienteerers. Some compete at elite level and train on a daily basis, perhaps 10 km or more, whereas others run only once a week just to keep in shape. Others like to be out in the forest and test their navigation skills every now and then just to experience nature in a more challenging way than an ordinary forest walk or just to find special places in the forest which they otherwise would not find. Some love orienteering as a physical challenge against nature, a tough adventure experience testing their endurance. The sport of orienteering can be done by everybody, irrespective of ambition, age, sex, profession or background. Orienteering is a family sport where all family members can participate, from the age of 5 to the age of 80.
Täby Orienteering has instruction courses for beginners, special training groups for youths up to age 16, activities for the elite runners, activities for those taking it easier, different internal club competitions and family outings. A large portion of the activities is centered around training several times per week, including special training to improve orienteering skills and running ability. During the summer months, most active runners compete on the weekends. In addition, we offer aerobics/fitness training indoors in the winter months.
Täby Orienteering has many years of experience in arranging both large and small orienteering events, normally as sole arranger but sometimes together with other clubs. Each year we organize at least one large competition (500-1,500 participants) and every 4 years we organize the large 25-manna relay with approximately 10,000 runners from all over the Nordic countries, Germany and the UK. We have our own maps covering several forest areas in the vicinity of Täby.
Orienteering has different types of competitions, individual and multi day events (for example the well known O-Ringen 5-days) and relays. In addition, there are night orienteering, park orienteering and ski-orienteering. The most well known and exciting competitions are the relays, primarily the 10-mila relay taking place in spring time every year around Stockholm, and the Jukola relay in Finland. Also, there are many others, such as Hälsingekavlen, Smålandskavlen and Kopparkavlen in the district of Dalarna. The 25-manna relay is an event where women and men, old and young all have equal importance to the success of the relay team.
Orienteering has in the latest few years become an international sport and the schedule of events in countries outside the Nordic countries is increasing. Both elite runners and families from Täby Orienteering has trained and competed in other countries with exciting and unusual terrain, such as Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, Russia, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, France, Austria, Spain, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Chile.
